The CDC and AAP do recommend sun block for small areas on the skin on children less than 6 months of age, but for all young children we recommend covering up and shade over sun block.
Rashes to sun block are unpredictable. We recommend that when trying a new sun block, apply it to about one square inch of skin on the inner forearm and observe for a day. If there is no rash, then use it more extensively.
