Flu Vaccine Recommendations
Vaccination recommendations for DallasAllergyImmunology patients:
- Children and adults age 2 years and older, including patients
with asthma, should receive FlumistĀ® nasal vaccine because it is more
effective and provides longer lasting immunity. FlumistĀ® should be
given now. Inactivated influenza vaccine (flu shot) is an acceptable
alternative but is not preferred. Inactivated flu vaccine should be
given in late October or early November. - Children 6 months to 24 months should receive inactivated
influenza vaccine. If the child has never had flu vaccine, two doses
are needed and the first dose should be given in late September or
early October. If only one dose is needed, it should be given in late
October or early November. - Patients with immunodeficiency, whether or not they are being
treated with gamma globulin, should receive influenza vaccine. There
are a few exceptions to this recommendation. If you or your child has
immunodeficiency, please email your physician for specific
recommendations. - The H1N1 vaccine is recommended for the following groups of individuals who are considered to be at increased risk of complications, according to current CDC guidelines:
Pregnant women
Health care workers
Family members of infants under 6 months of age
Children ages 6 months to 12 years
Adults ages 25 to 64 years with underlying health conditions, including asthma, diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, and cancer
CDC recommendations for H1N1 vaccine may change as the pandemic continues. We hope to start receiving shipment of H1N1 vaccine in mid-October. - Recommendations will be revised as new information becomes available.
