How to Use a Peak Flow Meter
PURPOSE OF PEAK FLOW MONITORING
A peak flow meter is a device used to measure the degree of airways obstruction in asthmatic airways. Just as blood pressure is measured in hypertension or blood sugar checked in diabetes, peak flow monitoring is very important in the management of asthma. Peak flow monitoring is especially useful for:
-
Establishing a personal best peak flow (PBPF) for baseline reference as part of an asthma treatment plan
-
Anticipating asthma flares and assessing response to treatments
-
Communicating with physicians and nurses regarding treatment of asthma
-
Periodic checks during routine office follow-up visits for asthma
INSTRUCTIONS FOR CHECKING AND RECORDING PEAK FLOWS
Bring your peak flow meter to every office visit – it is best to check your peak flows with the same peak flow meter all the time
Check peak flows every morning and evening before taking inhalers
It is best to check peak flows in a standing position
Move peak flow indicator to the zero position before each attempt
Prior to each attempt, relax and clear throat gently
Take the deepest breath possible, seal lips around mouthpiece and give a quick, forceful “huff” or blast into the meter
Record the best of three peak flow attempts in your peak flow diary
Follow instructions on your Asthma Action Plan according to the peak flow guidelines
If peak flows exceed previously established personal best peak flow, call office for new peak flow guidelines
